NUCLEAR DISASTER AND RADIATION PROTECTION

Question: "We recently moved to an area that is in close proximity to a nuclear power plant. And since a large number of our friends and family are employed there, I ask that you not print my name, initials or city. I have concerns about radiation leakage and how it could affect my family's health, especially my two small children. Are there any precautions we could take? There's no way we can move elsewhere."

Answer: "While most nuclear power plants are probably very safe, the effects of accidental radiation leakage can often be seen hundreds of miles away from the site. Just recently, it was discovered that the incidence of childhood leukemia in Greece has risen due to the Chernobyl fallout.

"Children are especially susceptible to radiation since they are still growing and cells are rapidly dividing. Cell DNA and other structures are most vulnerable to radiation damage. In the Chernobyl incident 10 years ago, Soviet children who were exposed to radiation while still in the womb were 2.5 times more likely to develop leukemia than those not exposed.

"I would suggest that anyone living within 300 miles of a nuclear plant keep a bottle of supplemental iodine on hand. I mentioned this years ago after the Chernobyl explosion, but with the proliferation of nuclear power plants around the world it bears repeating. Of the radioactive particles absorbed from the fallout, radioactive iodine is one of the most common. It is rapidly and easily absorbed and stored in the thyroid. In the event of an accident, I would suggest immediately administering iodine drops to family members. During the first few days when the fallout is the greatest, 10 drops three times a day for adults, half that for children and three drops a day for infants would be a good starting dosage. After that, only one or two drops a day would be necessary.

"If your thyroid is receiving and has stored adequate amounts of iodine, there will be far less chance that additional amounts of radioactive iodine will be absorbed and stored by your body.

"The only liquid supplemental iodine product I recommend is IOSOL from TPCS supplementation, I'll pass on a couple of other very timely uses for the product. One deals with children and the other with those in their retirement years.

"Subclinical symptoms of hypothyroidism have always been an overlooked problem in this country. It seems that a larger percent of every successive generation suffers from the problem, yet it is given less and less attention. Many of the children of this latest generation are routinely having difficulty concentrating in school and maintaining a motivation for learning. Many are labeled hyperactive. In the past I've described how these problems can be overcome by correcting low blood sugar problems and improving adrenal gland function. Hypothyroid problems may also be a significant contributing factor and should always be ruled out. I've seen dozens of children make dramatic improvements in their school and social lives after being given iodine supplementation and thyroid glandulars. The changes in their learning and cognitive skills is nothing short of phenomenal.

"I have also found that many of the memory problems and the inability to concentrate in the elderly can often be overcome with iodine supplementation. This is especially true in those individuals who exhibit other, more obvious signs of hypothyroidism such as constant fatigue, muscle aches and pains, depression, low body temperature, dry rough skin, hair loss, etc.

"Most underactive thyroid problems stem from a lack of raw material needed by your thyroid gland to produce the necessary hormones. Iodine is by far the most commonly needed material and supplementing 10 to 20 drops for the first couple of days and then reducing the dosage to 1 to 3 drops daily, is many times the only treatment needed. Results are often experienced in as short as a week, however, depending on the severity of the problem, it may take as long as a month. In most cases the results will be better if a thyroid glandular supplement is taken on a daily basis along with the iodine."
